Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica first documented the indication of Zanthoxylum bungeanum for'penetrating joints,removing deadened skin-flesh,alleviating cold-damp Bi pain'.This medicinal use,however,has gradually diminished with the passage of history,and its significance has faded into obscurity.This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the term's meaning and the historical applications of Zanthoxylum bungeanum,with related treatments classified into Bi diseases and sores and ulcers.From unearthed bamboo and silk manuscripts to handed-down prescriptions,Zanthoxylum bungeanum has been extensively utilized as a principal remedy for Bi diseases,involving heart Bi,blood Bi,and Bi in the limbs and meridians.For the treatment of sores and ulcers,it is commonly used in surgical trauma,carbuncles and scabies.Not only does it have the effect of warming yang and dissipating cold,removing dampness and relieving impediment,but it also has the function of warming the blood,detoxification parasiticide and relieving itching.The applications of Zanthoxylum bungeanum for'penetrating joints,removing deadened skin-flesh,alleviating cold-damp Bi pain'have been consistently seen over the generations,with both single and compound formulas proving effective,and the flexibility in formulating with pungent,warming and dredging herbs.It has been used in various forms such as pills,powders,ointments,medicinal liquors,and can be applied both internally and externally.Under the theme of changes in the efficacy of herbs,it is necessary to reassess the preservation and decay of therapeutic effects,and to discern the lost efficacy,which is akin to the pearl submerged in the depths of the ocean.
