On the basis of systematically sorting out the developmental origins of dampness pathogen theories from ancient to modern times,this paper identifies that a clear theoretical demarcation between endogenous and exogenous dampness took shape in the late Song and early Jin dynasties.Literatures prior to the Song dynasty mainly expounded dampness centered on exogenous dampness.During the Qin and Han dynasties,dampness-induced disorders were primarily attributed to humid climates and damp living environments.From the Three Kingdoms,Wei and Jin dynasties to the Song dynasty,dampness was generally categorized as an external pathogenic factor together with wind,cold,summer-heat and other pathogens.Influenced by Neo-Confucianism,physicians of the Song,Jin and Yuan dynasties focused on exploring internal pathogenic mechanisms of diseases.LIU Wansu elaborated thoroughly on the connotation,pathogenic characteristics and therapeutic principles of endogenous dampness.Subsequently,physicians including LI Dongyuan,LUO Zhiti and ZHU Danxi successively advanced the diagnostic and therapeutic theories as well as herbal prescription regimens for differentiated treatment of exogenous and endogenous dampness.Starting from concrete observations of illnesses triggered by long-term residence in damp terrain,traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)scholars gradually extended their research to interpret the pathogenetic connotations of endogenous dampness and applied relevant theories to clinical diagnosis and treatment,which gradually perfected the theoretical system of diseases induced by damp pathogens in TCM.
