Niche, interspecific association and community stability of dominant invertebrates in seaweed beds across different habitats of Gouqi Island

As critical functional components of seaweed bed ecosystems, invertebrate communities play an irreplaceable role in maintaining ecosystem health. This study aims to uncover the differences in community structure and stability of invertebrates between two contrasting seaweed bed habitats on Gouqi Island. We set 12 sampling stations in the local largest mussel aquaculture area and 3 stations in the adjacent natural intertidal zone, and collected all invertebrates within quadrats for analysis. Methods including niche measurement, variance ratio(VR),Spearman's rank correlation, community stability evaluation and R2 test were used to compare the diversity, niche characteristics, interspecific relationships and overall community stability of invertebrate communities between the two habitats. The main results were as follows:(1)The aquaculture area was dominated by Amphipoda, while the natural intertidal zone was dominated by Bivalvia, confirming that environmental heterogeneity results in differentiation of dominant species;(2)Though invertebrate communities in intertidal seaweed beds have stronger overall interspecific connections and more complex interaction networks, the community stability in the aquaculture area outperforms that in the intertidal zone in all seasons, especially in winter. This study reveals that large-scale mussel aquaculture reshapes the trophic structure of surrounding waters through ecological cascade effects driven by filter-feeding activities, which provides sufficient nutrient resources for the population expansion of specialized amphipods.Meanwhile, the relatively stable environment in the aquaculture area further promotes Amphipoda to become the dominant group in the mussel aquaculture ecosystem. Therefore, future research should focus on the ecological function of these new dominant species formed by aquaculture activities and their possible impacts on the long-term ecological sustainability of coastal aquaculture waters.
