A size-spectrum model-based assessment of Scomber japonicus stocks in the East China Sea and Yellow Sea

Chub mackerel(Scomber japonicus)distributed in the East China Sea and Yellow Sea is one of China's important economic fish species. In recent decades, the chub mackerel stock has been subjected to significant fishing pressure, showing a significant declining trend. It is imperative to strengthen the scientific utilization and management of chub mackerel resource and stock assessment serves as the prerequisite and foundation for its scientific utilization and management. Therefore, this study utilizes a size spectrum model(SSM)to assess the stock of chub mackerel, based on data which included catch and fishing effort from six provinces and two municipalities(i.e.,Fujian,Zhejiang,Shanghai,Jiangsu,Shandong,Hebei,Tianjin,and Liaoning)in China as well as the data from Japan and South Korea from 1973 to 2023,the age-weight relationships, and the age-weight composition of catch. The results indicate that:(1)The size spectrum model effectively fits observed data which included age-weight relationships,age-weight composition of catch, and catch from Japan and South Korea. However, the model's fit for Chinese chub mackerel yield is influenced by the selected fishing effort.Due to the high fishing mortality coefficient, increasing the natural mortality coefficient with senescence mortality coefficient has a relatively minor impact on the model outcomes, whereas the presence or absence of cannibalism significantly affects the results.(2)Based on the current assessment results, chub mackerel in the East China Sea and Yellow Sea is within the optimal yield range, neither overfished nor subject to overfishing. However, the biomass remains at a relatively low level. This study will further enrich the library of stock assessment models for chub mackerel in the East China Sea and Yellow Sea under data-limited conditions and provide a reference basis for the stock assessment and management of this species.
