In his work Yi Guan(Key Link of Medicine),Zhao Xianke champions the core theory of"kidney edema and vital gate fire",under which he develops a novel approach to cough by creatively integrating its pathogenesis with the functions of the spleen and kidney,arguing for adressing cough symptoms from the perspective of the two organs.His point of view not only breaks through the traditional thinking limitation of treating cough simply from the lung at that time,but also greatly enriches and develops the framework of administering treatment based on syndrome differentiation of traditional Chinese medicine.This paper categorizes Zhao Xianke's academic ideas on treating cough from the perspective of the spleen and kidney into three principles,e.g.,nourishing kidney yin to reduce ministerial fire,tonifying spleen qi to enhance lung qi,and warming spleen yang to treat kidney edema.By analyzing these concepts,this paper explores the theoretical foundations and innovation of his academic ideas.It is held that the extensive discussions on the treatment of cough from the perspective of the spleen and kidney in Yi Guan not only supplement the existing treatment methods and principles,but also indirectly improve the theories of TCM internal medicine,worthy of promotion and reference.
