Empowering waste sorting with mid-stream smart sorting technology:A solution for China’s distinctive waste classification system
Given the continuously increasing waste generation in China and the limitations of current waste classification methods in terms of effectiveness, there is an urgent need to explore new technological pathways to enhance the efficiency and performance of waste sorting. This study proposed a new waste classification model centered on midstream intelligent sorting technology. On the one hand, through targeted pretreatment technology and the integration of multi-modal visual recognition and robotic grasping technology,it achieved efficient sorting of complex domestic waste. On the other hand, through the innovation of miniaturized equipment,it adapted to the low-value characteristics of recyclables in the waste.Evaluations from engineering demonstration cases indicated that this technology could effectively separate 15%~30%of low-value recyclables from mixed municipal solid waste.Implementing smart sorting in 5%of the transfer stations in a case city could recover over 50 000 tons of recyclables annually.Preliminary estimates suggested that the return on investment for operating enterprises can reach 20%at a scale of 80 tons per day.The research demonstrated that mid-stream smart sorting technology offers a technically feasible and economically sustainable solution to reduce fiscal expenditures on waste classification while improving sorting efficiency.
