Engineers apply scientific and technical knowledge to engage in invention,technological development,and engineering construction.Under multiple constraints such as resources,environment,market,space,deadlines,and costs,they use design,processes,and construction activities to transform theory into application,benefiting humanity.This study analyzes the roles and contributions of engineers in China,examines the overall situation of the current engineering workforce,identifiesmain issues,and provides targeted recommendations. This article analyzes the scale and institutional status of China's engineering workforce,pointing out problems such as unclear basic numbers,declining professional attractiveness,weak management of engineering and technical talent,and the lack of engineering spirit. On this basis,it puts forward suggestions for strengthening the development of the engineering team. It is clarified that there are five issues in the construction of China's engineering workforce:Unclear baseline,lack of national-level overall management;Unclear concepts,low social recognition,and declining occupational attractiveness;imperfect system,weak management of engineering and technical talents;The construction issues of the general engineer workforce have not yet received attention;and the spirit of engineers urgently needs to be refined and promoted. On this basis,this article proposes suggestions for strengthening the engineering team:strengthen leadership and focus on overall planning;carry out in-depth research and make good plans;deepen institutional reforms and improve laws and regulations;promote the spirit of engineers and make the engineering profession "popular" again. China has the largest team of engineers in the world,serving as a unique force for technological and industrial innovation.They are widely distributed across various industries and fields,undertaking technical work from research and development,engineering construction to operation and maintenance,supporting the construction and operation of the world's most complete industrial system,and playing an important role in China's scientific and technological progress,industrial upgrading,and national defense development.
