Motor neuron disease(MND)is a group of chronic,progressive neurodegenerative disorders.The symptoms that emerge during disease progression show certain similarities to the condition known as yinfei(aphasia and paralysis)in Traditional Chinese Medicine.The core pathogenesis of yinfei lies in the depletion and exhaustion of kidney qi.The principle of treating the condition by addressing the kidneys runs throughout the Yinfei chapter of the Shengji Zonglu(Comprehensive Record of Holy Remedies),which contains five formulas for yinfei treatment.Among the medicinals used,those that enter the kidney meridian are the most common,and the sovereign herbs in these formulas also primarily focus on tonifying the kidneys.Formula selection is based on pattern differentiation,with modifications made according to the specific presentation.Therapeutic principles include dual tonification of yin and yang,warming yang to transform qi,resolving phlegm to benefit mental acuity,and reinforcing the root to extinguish wind.Specific preparation and administration method are tailored to the condition:pills are taken on an empty stomach for gradual,gentle tonification,while salt and alcohol are used as vehicles to guide the medicinals and enhance their effects.
