Professor ZHANG Biao thinks,in children,the zang-fu organs are delicate,the constitution and qi are not fully developed,and the defensive qi is weak.When affected by epidemic pathogens,the lungs are the first to be invaded.Prolonged illness leads to qi stagnation and heat accumulation.The liver fails to maintain free flow of qi,resulting in qi stagnation transforming into fire.This fire ascends counterflowing to the lungs,affecting lung qi descent.Fire pathogens easily consume lung yin and refining body fluids into phlegm.Phlegm and heat bind together,obstructing the airways.Counterflow fire invades the lungs,hence the treat-ment principle is clearing heat and draining the lungs,descending counterflow to relieve coughing,and trans-forming phlegm to unblock the collaterals.The modified Xiebai San(泻白散)is prescribed,with remarkable ef-ficacy.Professor ZHANG emphasizes that the treatment of pertussis in children should focus on stage differen-tiation.The therapeutic principles differ across the catarrhal stage,paroxysmal stage,and convalescent stage.Medications should be adjusted according to symptoms during clinical practice,rather than adhering rigidly to a single formula.One case is attached for validation.
