Peasants or Workers:the Class Orientation of the CPC to the Hired Farmers During the Agrarian Revolution
During the Agrarian Revolution, the CPC believed that hired farmers belonged to the cat-egory of the working class and regarded them as the Party's class foundation in the rural areas. The formation and evolution of this cognition reflected the dynamic responses and theoretical adjustments of the CPC to revolutionary practice issues.Firstly, the shift in the revolutionary line gave rise to the issue of the Party's class foundation. To address this challenge, the Party broke through the shack-les of traditional community divisions and incorporated hired farmers into the working class.Second-ly,fettered by the urban-centric revolutionary line, the CPC failed to place hired farmers on an e-qual footing with urban workers in the early stage of the Agrarian Revolution. With the changes in the revolutionary situation and the Party's deepening understanding, the CPC gradually shook off such shackles and treated agricultural workers and urban industrial workers on an equal basis.Thirdly, after land redistribution, hired farmers acquired land, and their identity as the"proletari-at"thus dissipated, which triggered a theoretical dilemma in judging the class affiliation of hired farmers. In the face of this dilemma, the CPC appropriately relaxed the criteria for identifying the working class and endowed hired farmers with a relatively stable identity as part of the working class.
