The pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis(UC)is complex,involving liver-spleen disharmony from stagnated wood constraining earth,dry-damp disharmony and intermingled cold-heat in stomach and intestines,disorder of qi ascent-descent with impaired reception-transformation,as well as disharmony of qi-blood and imbalance of yin-yang.Hence,the"harmonizing method"is applied to regulate liver-spleen,stomach-intestines,exterior-interior,qi-blood,qi ascent-descent,as well as cold and heat.For the pattern of liver depression and spleen deficiency,treatment should regulate qi and harmonize blood.so Frigid Extremities Powder is used to soothe the liver,fortify the spleen,harmonize qi and blood.For the pattern of dampness-heat stagnating in the intestines with unresolved exterior syndrome,treatment should resolve both exterior and interior,so modified Pueraria and Scutellaria and Coptis Decoction is adopted to clear heat,drain dampness,elevate clear yang and stop diarrhea.For the pattern of intermingled cold and heat,treatment should balance cold and heat equally,so related formulas of Heart-Draining Decoction is used to exert the effects of pungent dispersion and bitter purgation,or Mume Pills are applied to warm yang and nourish yin.By harmonizing the liver and spleen to smoothen qi movement,regulating the stomach and intestines to restore the normal ascending and descending balance,and reconciling qi,blood,yin,and yang to reinstate their normal physiological state,the body can regain physiological harmony.
