The concepts of Pingdi Songlin and Songmo are central to understanding the historical-geographical transformation of the upper Luanhe river basin.The former denotes a composite ecological landscape characterized by interlaced forests,grasslands,sandy lands,and wetlands,while the latter represents a dynamic political-ecological space constructed upon this natural foundation through dynastic institutions,ethnic activities,and frontier governance.Since the Tang Dynasty,this region has undergone institutional evolution—transitioning from the Tang's jimi administrative system and the Liao itinerant court system,through the Jin-Yuan political corridor,to the Qing imperial hunting grounds—thereby transforming from an inter-ethnic periphery into a core political-ecological zone within the state.In the late Qing and Republican periods,agricultural reclamation,extensive deforestation,and colonial resource extraction triggered structural ecological degradation.The mismatch between shifting livelihood strategies and environmental carrying capacity further exacerbated watershed imbalances.The evolutionary trajectory of this space,from a natural ecological base to a political governance arena and ultimately to a modern model of ecological restoration zone,systematically reveals the historical logic of human-environment interaction and institutional adaptation along the northern agro-pastoral ecotone,which offers valuable historical-geographical insights for contemporary ecological restoration.
