Introduction:barriers still have to be broken Organ transplantation is one of the most successful stories of modern medicine.Fifty years(from 1950 to 2000)were necessary to refine the product and bring it to the status of“standard”clinical practice.During the last 25 years,impressive developments in immunology,technology,oncology and molecular biology have driven major leaps forward.Maybe someday it will be possible to“create”perfect organs by using machine perfusion(MP)technology and to perform durable transplantation with organs from other species into humans by using the technology of gene editing and artificial intelligence.This 2026 special issue of Hepatobiliary&Pancreatic Disease International highlights some of these recent spectacular developments in the field of liver transplantation(LT).
