Clinical efficacy of collagen-based dressings in wound management:a focus on their interactive role in wound healingOA
The global challenge of difficult-to-heal wounds has significant implications for both patient outcomes and healthcare systems, due to the prolonged and complex nature of the healing process.Collagen-based dressings have emerged as a promising solution, leveraging collagen’s unique properties to support and accelerate wound healing. This review examined only the clinical efficacy of commercial collagen-based products tested over the last two decades.Data were analyzed according to product type(including pads, gels, and powders),their catabolism and their clinical applications.Recent advancements have been reported, including the combination of collagen with other biomaterials and its use as a vehicle for the controlled release of bioactive molecules, such as antimicrobials and analgesics.However,gold-standard products have yet to be developed, and the limited availability of advanced commercial options underscores the ongoing need for innovation. The integration of collagen with stem cells, growth factors, and blood derivatives was also provided to show new promises in tissue regeneration. Results of all analysed studies supported the real efficacy of collagen-based advanced dressing in the management of severe wounds.New advancements highlighted the focus of the scientific research toward innovative strategies that can enhance clinical outcomes.
