Treating polycystic ovary syndrome depression from liver and kidney based on the theory of Yi-Gui homology

Polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS)is a common reproductive endocrine disorder that primarily affects women of reproductive age.It is often associated with significant depressive symptoms, and its prevalence is much higher than in the general female population.Recent research has deepened our understanding of PCOS,revealing that it not only impacts reproductive function but also significantly affects emotional and psychological well-being.Although modern medicine has made some progress in treating depression related to PCOS,conventional drug therapies often associated with adverse reactions, dependency issues, and lack of long-term efficacy. Therefore, finding treatment methods with fewer side effects and more lasting efficacy has become crucial.Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)offers unique theoretical advantages in treating PCOS-related depression. The theory of Yi-Gui homology(乙癸同源)provides a new perspective on treating depression in PCOS patients.According to this theory, the core pathological mechanisms of PCOS-related depression can be attributed to"kidney deficiency"and"liver stagnation."Kidney deficiency not only leads to reproductive dysfunction but also causes insufficient nourishment of the brain essence, further exacerbating depressive symptoms.Liver stagnation results in impaired Qi(气)circulation and emotional distress, leading to mood swings and even worsening anxiety and depression.Kidney deficiency and liver stagnation interact and influence each other, jointly promoting the development of depression.The"Yi-Gui homology"theory emphasizes four core aspects:the mutual transformation of kidney and liver essence and blood;their interdependent storage and discharge;the interconnectedness of meridians;the reciprocal relationship between mother and child organs. This theory provides a solid theoretical foundation for the TCM approach of"combined liver-kidney therapy"and offers a practical framework for treating PCOS-related depression.Professor YE Liqun proposes that the fundamental treatment for PCOS-related depression should focus on"nourishing the kidney, soothing the liver, and relieving depression".This approach not only emphasizes combined liver-kidney therapy but also aligns with the physiological changes in the female menstrual cycle.By using a cycle-adjusting method, the treatment plan is tailored to optimize the therapeutic effects of TCM.
