Research on Visual Perception in Highway Tunnel Lighting Considering Age Differences

Lighting in highway tunnels is critical for driving safety, and the visual perception capabilities of drivers, which change significantly with age, undoubtedly place higher demands on tunnel lighting design.Through literature analysis, this study reviews the research progress on visual perception in highway tunnel lighting that considers drivers'age differences. The research results indicate that most existing studies quantitatively analyze the visual performance and comfort evaluation of drivers in different age groups across various lighting zones of tunnels via driving simulation and real-vehicle experiments. It is found that middle-aged and elderly drivers exhibit longer visual adaptation time, higher sensitive to glare, and a slowed processing speed for dynamic visual information. These factors cause them to face higher visual impairments and safe driving risks within the complex light environments of tunnels. However, current highway tunnel lighting design standards fail to fully meet the driving safety and visual comfort needs of elderly drivers. Therefore, there is still room for optimization and development in highway tunnel lighting design that takes into account drivers'age-related visual perception.
