Academic aspiration and interest(AAI)serves the foundation for cultivating top-notch innovative talents,and the factor influencing its development have attracted widespread attention.However,the factor of peer interaction has not yet received the recognition it deserves.Based on survey data on the learning experiences of undergraduate students at a research university,the baseline regression,robustness tests,and heterogeneity analysis were employed to investigate the effects of peer interaction on the development of AAI among top-notch undergraduates.The results indicate that peer interaction has a significant positive impact on the development of AAI in top-notch undergraduates,a conclusion that remains valid after robustness checks,including core variable substitution and propensity score matching.Further analysis reveals that the impact of peer interaction exhibits an"M-shaped"fluctuation trend,with high-impact nodes at the 25th and 75th percentiles.Peripheral peer interaction has a greater influence on the development of AAI,with its effect surpassing that of core peer interaction at multiple quantiles-a phenomenon aptly described as"distant ties outweigh close ties".Additionally,top-notch students in science and engineering are more susceptible to the positive effects of peer interaction,while those in medicine and economics/management are prone to negative effects from core peer interaction.Universities should fully recognize the educational value of peer interaction,promote cross-circle peripheral peer interaction,and strengthen targeted guidance for peer interaction.
