Under the backdrop of globalization,the field of higher education exhibits increasingly complex spatial orders and diverse interactive relationships.However,the prevailing paradigm of methodological nationalism has confined higher education research within the endogenous analytical unit of the"nation-state."This not only overlooks the roles of various global and local forces both within and beyond national boundaries but also reinforces an inter-state mindset centered on national competition.Consequently,it undermines the non-exclusive and non-competitive spirit of higher education and hampers the orderly construction of a global higher education space.In response,there is an urgent need to renew the global consciousness of higher education within a more open and holistic spatial framework and reshape its understanding of the world in the context of globalization.Zhao Tingyang's theory of Tianxia(all-under-heaven)offers a systematic and comprehensive conception of spatial order for reexamining the global space of higher education.From the perspective of Tianxia,the global space of higher education presents a complete spatial order and a model of co-existence and harmony.It establishes an ethical stance based on non-exclusive global common interests and relational rationality,operating through a universally effective order-maintenance system.The theory of Tianxia restores the"world"as the subject of global studies,providing an alternative explanatory framework to overcome the long-standing challenges of scale dislocation,fragmented values,and governance failures in research on the globalization and internationalization of higher education.Utilizing Tianxia theory as a theoretical resource for rethinking the global space of higher education symbolizes the transformation of Chinese philosophical wisdom into a theoretical language with global relevance,addressing the contemporary need to construct an autonomous knowledge system and contribute Chinese discourse to the world.
