The Minimal Theory of Mind assumes the attribution of mental states and thus does not represent the most basic form of mindreading.To examine a more elementary basis of mindreading,this article revisits its developmental origins from an ontogenetic perspective and focuses on the role of animacy perception.Based on evidence from evolutionary biology,comparative studies,and cognitive neuroscience,we review recent research on animacy perception and its involvement in early social cognition.On this basis,the article outlines an analytical framework of"Minimal Other Minds",in which animacy perception is examined from three aspects:procedural mechanisms,constituent elements,and structural organization.This framework provides a systematic perspective for discussing minimal forms of mindreading and contributes to a clearer understanding of the perceptual foundations of social cognition.
