With its unique Chinese rural narrative and profound culture,Red Sorghum has become a crucial carrier for the international dissemination of Chinese literature and culture.The book contains a wide variety of culture-specific items with rich cultural connotations,which constitute the key focus and major difficulty in its translation.Howard Goldblatt's translation has,to a certain extent,promoted the overseas dissemination of Red Sorghum,and the study of his translator behavior helps provide insights for the better global cultural outreach of Chinese literature.Based on the theory of translator behavior criticism,the study analyzed the translation methods employed by Howard Goldblatt for culture-specific items in the English version of Red Sorghum.Furthermore,utilizing the"Truth-seeking,Utility-attaining"continuum evaluation framework,it conducted a quantitative assessment of the degree of truth-seeking and utility-attaining manifested in the translator's behavior.The study finds that Howard Goldblatt's translation behavior takes both truth-seeking and utility-attaining into account,and on the whole,it shows a tendency of utility-attaining as the primary focus and truth-seeking as supplementary,with the ultimate goal of enhancing reader acceptance and achieving overseas publication.It should also be noted that such a high degree of utility-attaining has reduced the fidelity of Chinese culture.
