In the 21st century,the peasant movements in the Republic of Korea(ROK)have taken on a new developmental momentum.Resisting agricultural liberalization,stabilizing grain prices,and advocating ecological agriculture have evolved into the core themes of these movements,which are specifically manifested in opposing agricultural market opening policies,building ecological agricultural communities,and promoting organic catering.Faced with the World Trade Organization(WTO)Doha Round negotiations and various free trade agreements,ROK peasant organizations have opposed the opening of agricultural product markets through overseas protests and domestic demonstrations.Meanwhile,guaranteeing rice prices has become a core demand of the movements.By constructing ecological agricultural communities and popularizing organic catering,the movements have elevated simple economic interest appeals into a narrative concerning the public welfare attributes and ecological value of agriculture.Strategically,the ROK peasant movements demonstrate new characteristics of overall alliance and diversified advancement.On the one hand,they seek solidarity with other social movements,form close coalitions with labor movements and left-wing political parties,and incorporate agricultural issues into a broader social agenda;on the other hand,channels of resistance have become increasingly diversified,shifting from traditional street confrontations to institutionalized approaches such as elections,legislation and referendums,as well as social and cultural fields including school meal programs and the slow food movement.By promoting the legal enshrinement of the public welfare functions of agriculture and establishing systems of farmer allowances and basic income,they attempt to construct a favorable supporting system amid the predicament between neoliberalism and green capitalism.
