The oppositions of chongniu(doublet initials)vary across the rhyme dictionaries of the Qieyun(Cut Rhymes)tradition;some distinctions present in early texts were merged in the Guangyun(Broad Rhymes).This paper discusses the Zhi(Zhi Rime)and You(You Rime)which exhibit chongniu oppositions in the Qieyun.While these two rimes appear to be Type C rimes based on the Guangyun,the sole trace identifying them as chongniu rimes is the preservation of bilabial initials,which did not shift to labiodentals.Based on textual variations within the Qieyun tradition,this study explores the original state of the chongniu oppositions in the Zhi and You rimes and the process of their merger.The first part focuses on the Zheng-Zhi rimes,clarifying that certain characters under the Jian,Qun,and Yi initials in the open-mouth Zhi rime form an independent category that can be linked to Type B;it also notes that the same situation applies to the corresponding level-tone Zheng rime.The second part examines the reasons for the significant discrepancies in the category correlation of the You rime between the Guangyun and other texts of the Qieyun tradition.
