A review of cerebellar structural and functional alterations associated with autism spectrum disorders
Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD)is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder. In recent years, the cerebellum-a brain region crucial for social, cognitive, and language functions-has gained increasing attention in ASD research. This review systematically synthesizes recent studies on structural and functional changes in the cere-bellum in ASD,covering multiple dimensions such as morphology, functional connectivity, and microstructural ima-ging.Notably,reductions in gray matter in the cerebellar vermis and posterior lobes(e.g.,crus I/II),as well as dis-rupted connectivity between the cerebellum and frontal/parietal regions, are among the most frequently reported findings.Despite some heterogeneity in cerebellar regions, participant age,and measurement techniques across stud-ies,the cumulative evidence supports the key role of the cerebellum in the development of core symptoms of ASD.
