Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD)is characterized by a protracted course and complex pathogenesis.Although the disease is located in the lung,its onset,progression,and prognosis are closely related to the spleen.TCM master HONG Guangxiang proposed the concept of"seeing lung disease as the first to strengthen the spleen",which has been widely applied in clinical practice.First,this paper elaborates on the close physiological and pathological relationship between the lung and the spleen.Second,pathological factors observed in COPD patients,such as respiratory muscle fatigue,nutritional disorders,and decreased immunity,are all associated with imbalance of the spleen and stomach functions.Finally,in clinical application,HONG developed Buyuan Decoction to strengthen the spleen and supplement the ancestral Qi,formulated Yiqi Huwei Decoction to tonify the spleen and warm yang,and skillfully used Linggui Zhugan Decoction to eliminate the source of phlegm generation.
