Cognitive Impairment and Protective Strategies in Mice Exposed to Rapid As-cent to Extreme High-Altitude Environments

As human activities expand into extremely high-altitude regions, rapid exposure to the extreme high-altitude environment can trigger a cascade of complex neuropathological responses.Notably, the resultant cognitive impairment poses a significant threat to the health and safety of personnel, athletes, and travelers in these areas.Although the clinical significance of this impairment is well-established,a systematic understanding of the intricate underlying neurobiological mechanisms remains lacking. This knowledge gap has hindered the development and application of efficient and integrated protective strategies. This review synthesizes current evidence on the impact of rapid extreme high-altitude exposure on cognitive function in mice and its pathological mechanisms.Furthermore,we evaluate diverse protective approaches based on distinct defense mechanisms, aiming to provide theoretical foundations and practical insights for developing targeted intervention strategies.
