Study on plant diversity of different types of collapsing gullies in the upper reaches of the Hanjiang River

Plant diversity serves as a key indicator for evaluating the ecological functions of vegetation.Taking the collapsing gully area in the upper reaches of the Hanjiang River—where gully erosion is the most severe and concentrated in Guangdong Province—as the research object, this study employed the quadrat sampling method to investigate the plant composition, diversity, and community similarity across three gully types:non-gully forest land, relatively stable collapsing gullies, and active collapsing gullies. The aim was to provide a scientific basis for screening pioneer plants and guiding ecological restoration in collapsing gully areas. The results showed that:1)Non-gully forest land exhibited the highest species richness and evenness overall, followed by relatively stable collapsing gullies, with active collapsing gullies showing the lowest richness and diversity across all vegetation layers.2)Non-gully forest land and relatively stable collapsing gullies had high similarity in species composition in the tree and shrub layers, while active collapsing gullies differed significantly from other plots. The herb layer showed strong similarity across gully types, indicating robust environmental adaptability of the herbaceous plants.3)Pinus massoniana,Rhodomyrtus tomentosa, and Dicranopteris dichotoma ranked first in importance value in the tree, shrub, and herb layers of the two gully areas, respectively. These dominant species are well-adapted to harsh gully habitats and can serve as pioneer species for vegetation restoration in collapsing gullies of the upper Hanjiang River.
