An Exploration of the Body Conception in Traditional Chinese Medicine Through the Lens of the"Five Orbiculi Diagram"in Ophthalmology

The"Five Orbiculi Diagram"is one of the core images in the theoretical framework of traditional Chinese ophthalmology. Its theoretical origins can be traced back to the Inner Canon of Huangdi.During the Sui and Tang dynasties,it absorbed the Buddhist concept of"orbiculi",was systematized in the Song and Yuan periods, and finally crystallized into a fixed pictorial form during the transition from the Yuan to the Ming dynasty. This diagram, featuring a stylized eye illustration accompanied by textual annotations, divides the eye into the flesh orbiculus, blood orbiculus,Qi orbiculus, wind orbiculus, and water orbiculus, corresponding respectively to the spleen, heart, lung, liver, and kidney, thereby serving both theoretical explication and clinical guidance. The body conception in traditional Chinese medicine is centered on the principles of"unity of heaven and humanity, correspondence between form and spirit, and unimpeded circulation of Qi",emphasizing the holistic functionality of the human body. The"Five Orbiculi Diagram"serves as an exquisite visual representation of this body conception, embodying profound philosophical significance regarding the body and offering an important window into the understanding of life and disease in traditional Chinese medicine.
