Interpretation of Dong Zhongshu's Title as"the Head of All Confucian Scholars"from the Philosophical Perspective of"Cultural Memory":Centered on Historical Recordsand Book of Han
研读《史记·儒林列传》,就会发现在司马迁笔下董仲舒仅仅是一个比较突出的儒家学者,根本配不上"群儒首"称号.而在班固《汉书》的书写中,董仲舒不但是名副其实的"群儒首",还是"儒者宗".对于同一个历史人物,汉代两部史书的记载与评价差异巨大.如果运用德国扬·阿斯曼教授提出的"文化记忆"哲学思想来阐释,就会发现其中的奥秘,明白刘歆、班固把"群儒首""儒者宗"称号加冕给董仲舒的良苦用心.
A careful reading of Biographies of Confucian Scholars(Rulin Liezhuan)in Historical Recordsreveals that,in Sima Qian's portrayal,Dong Zhongshu was merely a prominent Confucian scholar,by no means worthy of the title"the Headof All Confucian Scholars".In Ban Gu's Book of Han,by contrast,Dong Zhongshu is not only the genuine"the Head of All Confucian Scholars"but also"the Paragon of Confucian Scholars".Regarding the same historical figure,the wo Han dynasty historical worksdiffer drastically in their accounts and evaluations.An interpretation from the philosophical perspective of"cultural memory",as proposed by the German scholar Professor Jan Assmann,unlocks the rationale behind this discrepan-cy and illuminates the deliberate intention of Liu Xin and Ban Gu in bestowing upon Dong Zhongshu the titles"the Head of All ConfucianScholars"and"the Paragon of Confucian Scholars".
