In 2018,the Ancient Canton Native Culture Promotion Association of Guangzhou acquired an historical photograph of Jianyuan from overseas,which reveals noticeable differences in the roofs of the main and auxiliary buildings compared to their current conditions.This historical photograph provides new clues regarding to the original state of Jianyuan.This paper attempts to discuss the roof structure of Jianyuan during that period based on this photograph.Through verification of the photograph's dating and image analysis,significant differences in the roof are identified.The research traces back the original form of the main building's roof from perspectives such as roof function and drainage capacity,while further exploring the structural logic behind the roof design within its historical and socio-cultural context.The design of the roof canopy on the main building of Jianyuan at the time of its construction balanced both aesthetic considerations in the facade design and functional requirements for drainage.This harmony between architectural form and function epitomizes the influence of the"veranda style"on modern Chinese architecture.Through its"de-formalized"reinterpretation of the veranda form,the roof of Jianyuan serves as a compelling micro-level example of"cultural interaction"and"independent innovation"in understanding the process of China's architectural modernization.
