Design of an Elderly-Oriented Smart Medicine Box from a Multimodal Perspective

For the problems such as sensory decline, memory deterioration, and cognitive impairment faced by elderly, particularly empty-nest seniors during medication taking process, through user journey mapping and grounded theory analysis, the key demands in their medication process are identified and refined, leading to the development of a three-dimensional demand model encompassing functional, cognitive, and emotional dimensions.Based on this model,a four-layer system architecture is constructed, and a smart medicine box utilizing multimodal interaction technology is designed.By integrating the multimodal hardware sensing and redundant output mechanism, the system effectively reduces operational errors among elderly users and enhances elderly-friendly performance.Meanwhile, the emotionally oriented interaction design of the family collaboration module strengthens users'willingness to engage, thereby forming a closed-loop service system. The findings demonstrate that multimodal interaction can significantly improve medication management for the elderly, offering a design reference that balances technological practicality and humanistic care in elderly-friendly product development.
