History,Discourse, and Difference:Cultural Identity Construction in Timothy Mo's The Monkey King

Drawing on Stuart Hall's theory of cultural identity, this paper examines the construction of cultural identity in Wallace, the mixed-race protagonist in The Monkey King by the Chinese-British writer Timothy Mo,through the three interrelated dimensions of history, discourse and difference.Colonial history and familial memory jointly shape the binary foundation of his early identity, while the dominant discourse within the Chinese family disciplines him into the position of a marginalized Other.Meanwhile, the cultural space of difference prompts him to continually reconstruct his identity through interactions with various significant others.Although Wallace undergoes a provisional reconstruction of his cultural identity during his"exile,"his return to the family reawakens an underlying anxiety about his sense of belonging.Through its depiction of Wallace's evolving identity,The Monkey King profoundly reveals the complexity, instability and unfinished nature of an individual's identity construction in a cross-cultural context.
