The rapid surge in farmland rent has undermined China's food security.Existing literature on this issue primarily cen-ters on the rent of transferred farmland,but it overlooks two critical facts:over 60%of farmland in China remains under owner-operation,and the role of agricultural technological progress in shaping farmland rent has been largely ignored.To clarify the im-pact of agricultural technological progress on farmland rent and rental rate,this study draws on national data concerning the costs and benefits of agricultural products,takes vegetable products as the research subject,characterizes agricultural technological progress by facility agriculture,and empirically analyzes the influence of agricultural technological progress on farmland rent and rental rate.The results of the benchmark regression demonstrate that agricultural technological progress,as represented by facili-ty agriculture,significantly elevates farmland rent while reducing the rental rate.This conclusion is further verified by employing the interactive fixed effects model,the propensity score matching method,and by measuring generalized agricultural technological progress using time trend variables.Mechanism analysis reveals that the boosting effect of facility agriculture-based technological progress on the per-mu output value of vegetables outweighs its effect on farmland rent,thus exerting a negative impact on the rental rate.Meanwhile,such technological progress drives up farmland rent by increasing both the unit price and per-mu yield of vegetables,with a more pronounced effect on vegetable quality than on quantity.In conclusion,this study argues that science and technology constitute the fundamental solution to advancing agriculture.It is imperative to promote the R&D,transformation,and extension of agricultural technologies in light of practical agricultural development needs,accelerate the modernization of facil-ity agriculture,and pursue differentiated development strategies.
