Cultural gene translation:AIGC design and evaluation of Hainan Li ethnic patterns

The patterns of the Li ethnic group in Hainan constitute an important component of intangible cultural heritage.Their design principles reveal a distinctive ethnic aesthetic, characterized by complex configurations, rich semantic layers, and a high degree of symbolism. These patterns collectively embody the social structure, nature worship, and spiritual beliefs of the Li people in Hainan. However, existing research on the digital translation of Hainan Li ethnic patterns has primarily focused on the digital archiving stage, making it difficult to achieve in-depth translation, living transmission, and scalable innovation in contemporary contexts.Meanwhile, against the backdrop of rapid advancements in AIGC technology, exploring digital translation paradigms for Hainan Li ethnic patterns within contemporary design contexts holds both practical and methodological significance for enhancing their visibility as intangible cultural heritage and elevating the added value of cultural and creative products.Drawing upon the theory of cultural gene translation, this study explores digital translation pathways for Hainan Li patterns across three dimensions:structural reconstruction,multi-artistic style generation, and quantitative evaluation. To address issues such as efficiency gaps, inadequate evaluation systems, and limited stylistic expansion in the digital innovation of intangible cultural heritage traditions, this paper takes Hainan Li ethnic patterns as its research subject.Centered on the cultural gene theory framework,it proposed an AIGC-based innovation workflow for visual forms of intangible cultural heritage and constructed a systematic solution spanning theory to practice.First,a digital database of Hainan Li ethnic patterns was established through field research and literature review, followed by standardized image preprocessing.Next, shape grammar was employed to perform rule-based reconstruction of the extracted cultural genes. Then,a style transfer model based on an encoder-decoder architecture was applied to perform style transfer across multiple artistic styles on the innovative patterns. Finally,a combined qualitative and quantitative evaluation system was constructed, incorporating metrics such as structural similarity(SSIM)and content fidelity(CF)to scientifically assess the generated results. This paper advanced the theory of cultural gene translation from a conceptual framework into a computable and verifiable digital methodology. It constructed a comprehensive workflow encompassing cultural genes, technological translation, and quantitative evaluation, enabling a standardized and quantifiable translation process.Furthermore,it established a quantitative evaluation system integrating subjective and objective criteria, providing quantifiable standards for the digital transmission of intangible cultural heritage patterns.Experimental results demonstrate that the digital innovation workflow developed in this paper achieves high-quality,multi-style automated generation while preserving the core structures and cultural semantics of Hainan Li ethnic patterns. Objective metric analysis indicates that the generated pattern data align with the artistic transformation characteristics of style transfer. The underlying structural features of the motifs are well preserved at a perceptual level. The core cultural symbolism exhibits high stability, and the generated images demonstrate good visual coherence and overall quality. The subjective evaluation results further validate the differences in compatibility and cultural acceptance between various artistic styles and Hainan Li ethnic patterns. In practical applications, the generated patterns have been successfully applied to home textiles and cultural and creative product designs, demonstrating the method's strong design extensibility and practical value.Research indicates that the methodology presented in this paper enables high-quality digital reconstruction while preserving the cultural genes of Hainan Li ethnic patterns, supporting the scientific validity and effectiveness of the proposed translation paradigm. The AIGC-based innovative methodology for Hainan Li ethnic patterns proposed in this study establishes a reference paradigm for research on the digital generation of intangible cultural heritage.Future research may further expand into directions such as cross-pattern generalization,multi-modal generation, and interactive design,so as to advance the living transmission and innovative development of intangible cultural heritage in the digital era.
