结构理性与地域演绎:萨拉索塔建筑学派的亚热带木构系统解析OACHSSCD
Structural Rationality and Regional Deduction:Analysis of the Subtropical Timber Construction System of Sarasota School of Architecture
The Sarasota School of Architecture was a pivotal force in the regional practice of modern architecture during the mid-20th century. Its timber buildings integrated the modernist concept of prefabricated construction with the humid and hot climate of the region, giving rise to a distinctive subtropical architectural language. The design philosophy and methodology of the Sarasota School of Architecture significantly enriched the conceptual framework of modern architectural practice. In this study,40 works by three representative architects of the school,Ralph Twitchell,Paul Rudolph, and Victor Lundy, were analyzed.Starting from the ideological origins of the creative philosophy of the school, the technical characteristics of the four timber construction systems developed around the principles of"rapid construction, climate adaptation, and formal innovation"were identified by analyzing the spatial and structural characteristics of these works and investigating their interconnections. The study highlights the exploration and breakthroughs of the school in the expressive potential of prefabricated timber construction technology, examines the relationships among the four timber systems(the square timber frame system, the platform frame system, the lightweight timber frame system, and the laminated timber curved beam system)in terms of typology and technological evolution, and addresses gaps in existing research. The subtropical timber architecture of the Sarasota School employs standardized wooden components as the fundamental units, achieving rapid construction through modular assembly. It utilizes louvers and raised floors to enhance natural ventilation, complemented by shading grilles and deep overhanging eaves to mitigate intense sunlight. The design integrates regional characteristics into its form and space, achieving a harmonious blend of structural rationality and spatial poetry. The creative philosophy of the school represents a fusion of modernism with southern regional experience:it incorporates the prefabricated assembly concepts of Gropius and Marcel Breuer,as well as the fluid spatial principles of Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe, while also drawing on the"Florida Form"and"Usonian houses"practices of Frank Lloyd Wright and the Southern architectural expertise of Walter Burkhardt, which is known as a successful localization of modernist principles within the subtropical humid environment. It is argued that,as pioneers in subtropical timber architecture design, the diverse timber architectural works of the Sarasota School possess conceptual value that transcends mere architectural structures.Based on practices in reshaping local architecture through structural rationality, regional climate considerations, and lifestyle adaptations, the school has provided lasting methodological models for contemporary sustainable architecture. Its technical innovations, such as a modular wooden construction system and integrated shading-ventilation technology prototypes, remain highly applicable to contemporary green prefabricated buildings. The Sarasota School and the modern China Lingnan School of Architecture exhibit the characteristic of"heterogeneity with shared structure":both faced similar challenges from humid and hot climates during the same period, and their architectural communities were rooted in specific regions for a long period, maintaining close exchanges and conceptual consensus within their groups, and seeking an integration of modern technology with local realities. Both have left invaluable legacies of tropical modern architecture for the world. However, they have significant differences in terms of technical approaches and aesthetic orientations:Lingnan architecture emphasizes"garden-style"spatial organization, reflecting a"practical and understated"subtropical realism. The Sarasota School, grounded in the North American industrial construction system, developed a"lightweight and expressive"structural expressionism. The"structural strategy"of the Sarasota School and the"garden strategy"of Lingnan represent two distinct regional responses to modernity. This not only reflects profound cultural divergences but also collectively expands the potential boundaries of modernism within the subtropical context.
