The formation mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)quality is a core scientific issue crucial for ensuring clini-cal efficacy and industrial development.This paper systematically analyzes the academic thought of the"Environmental Modification Theory of TCM Quality"proposed by Professor Wan Deguang.The theory pioneeringly proposes that TCM quality is the result of com-prehensive and dynamic"modification"by multiple environmental factors(including climate,soil,biology,and human activities)within a genetically dominant framework,characterized by plasticity,reversibility,and synergy.This article traces the theoretical evo-lution from traditional knowledge of genuine regional medicinal materials to a modern scientific system,elucidates its core connotation of"genetic potential-environmental modification-cultivation regulation",and reviews a series of empirical studies conducted by Professor Wan and his team on dozens of medicinal materials such as Salvia miltiorrhiza,Polygala tenuifolia,mulberry leaf,and Poria cocos.From multiple dimensions,including the correlation of climate and soil factors,the regulation of agronomic measures(e.g.,fertiliza-tion and crop rotation),the influence of microecological environments(soil microorganisms),and optimization of harvesting and pro-cessing,these studies have verified the directional modification effect and regulatory pathways of the environment on the accumulation of bioactive ingredients in TCM.The research demonstrates that the"Environmental Modification Theory"not only profoundly reveals the scientific essence behind the phenomenon of"same species,different quality"in TCM and deepens the theoretical understanding of genuine regional medicinal material formation,but also provides key theoretical foundations and practical guidance for habitat selection,cultivation management,overcoming continuous cropping obstacles,and implementing whole-process quality control in Good Agricultur-al Practice for TCM materials.This theory promotes interdisciplinary integration and holds significant academic value and broad practi-cal prospects for achieving precise and ecological development in TCM agriculture,ensuring the sustainable utilization of TCM re-sources,and maintaining the stability and reliability of clinical effects.
