Electrochemical CO_(2) reduction to C_(3+) products:A review Author links open overlay panelOA
A possible pathway to achieve carbon neutrality is the production of high-value-added multicarbon chemicals via electrochemical CO_(2) reduction reaction(CO_(2)RR).This review highlights recent advances in CO_(2)RR for C_(3+)chemical production, emphasizing electrode design and electrocatalytic system optimization. We also explore a tandem system where CO_(2)RR to CO occurs, followed by CO to C_(3+)chemicals,as CO can be easily produced by electrocatalytic CO_(2) reduction with high production rates and nearly 100%selectivity.We provide a comprehensive analysis of the systems that meet the following criteria:utilizing CO_(2)/CO as the carbon source, completely or partially employing electrocatalysis, and producing C_(3+)chemicals.This review showcases a new outlook on the main challenges and forthcoming prospects in this research field, opening new opportunities for the innovative utilization of CO_(2).
