On the possible meteorological factors contributing to lightning-ignited wildfires in West Sichuan:A case study of MuLi wildfire in March 2019OA

Lightning-ignited wildfires (LIWs) are a significant type of natural disaster in forest ecosystems. However, due to their high randomness and complexity, they remain difficult to detect and precisely locate in time. This study analyzes a typical LIW case to examine lightning characteristics and the associated meteorological conditions during thunderstorm development. In this case, the wildfire occurred during the early stage of thundercloud development, when lightning frequency and intensity were relatively low. Nevertheless, local conditions-low humidity, strong winds, and lack of precipitation-were favorable for ignition. Notably, the parent lightning was pre dominantly negative, whose discharge properties may increase the risk of ignition. A comparative analysis of another LIW case in the same region also showed a predominance of negative lightning. These findings suggest that, under the specific environmental conditions of this region, negative lightning may have a higher potential to ignite wildfires. Based on individual case studies, this research provides preliminary insights into the mechanisms of LIWs.
