Divergent Narrations of Surrender and Regional Consensus in Northern and Southern Family-History Writing of the Early Yuan

The successive falls of the Jin dynasty and the Southern Song in the thirteenth century progressively pro-duced two distinct groups of people who lived through dynastic transition.Descendants of newly risen families that had submitted to the Mongols from the Jin constructed and transmitted their family histories through such textual forms as bio-graphical accounts and epitaphic inscriptions.Under the influence of prolonged turmoil and the collapse of political order, these family-history writings placed marked emphasis on the identities of both the surrendering ancestors and the Mongol commanders who accepted their submission, giving rise to a relatively stable narrative structure. In some instances, the an-cestors'act of surrender was skillfully grafted onto the Mongol political centre, thereby showcasing the political capital held by the lineage.By contrast, families that crossed from Song to Yuan adopted a decidedly different approach to the nar-ration of surrender:the identity of the submitting party was presented in circumlocutory terms, evincing a tendency to downplay or even obscure the event of capitulation.Although comparable in nature and roughly contemporaneous in date of production, these two corpora of texts—distinguished chiefly by regional origin—display markedly divergent features, indicating that the family-history writing of this period coalesced around different regional consensuses in the north and in the south. The north-south divide manifest in the construction of family history reveals the complexity of cultural integra-tion in the early Yuan and serves as a textual reflection of the formative process through which the early configuration of the community of the Chinese nation was shaped.
