Objective:To examine which type of harsh discipline(psychological aggression vs.corporal punishment)and whose harsh discipline(fathers vs.mothers)is more important in predicting children's problem behaviors.Methods:A total of 1,959 elementary school students completed Parent-Child Conflict Tactics Scale(CTSPC)and the Youth Self-Report(YSR).We subsequently used dominance analysis to assess the predictors' relative importance.Results:(1)In terms of the form of harsh discipline,psychological aggression was relatively more important than corporal punishment in predicting both boys' and girls' internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors;(2)In terms of the source of harsh disci-pline,paternal psychological aggression was relatively more important than maternal psychological aggression in predicting boys' internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors,while maternal psychological aggression was relatively more impor-tant than paternal psychological aggression in predicting girls' internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors.In addi-tion,paternal corporal punishment was relatively more important than maternal corporal punishment in predicting both boys' and girls' internalizing problem behaviors,while maternal corporal punishment was relatively more important than pa-ternal corporal punishment in predicting both boys' and girls' externalizing problem behaviors.Conclusion:(1)Psychologi-cal aggression was relatively more important than corporal punishment in predicting children's problem behaviors;(2)The relative importance of paternal and maternal harsh discipline in predicting children's problem behaviors varies depending on the child's gender and types of problem behaviors.
