On Ethan's Identity Crisis and Self-redemption in The Winter of Our Discontent
The Winter of Our Discontent reveals the social reality of the gradual weakening of traditional values caused by the prevalence of con-sumer culture in capitalist society, set in the eastern region of the United States after the war, reflecting the troubled mental state of the American bourgeoisie by showing the changes in Ethan's thoughts and behaviors.Through its portrayal of the inner world of the underprivileged individuals strug-gling in moral dilemmas,it criticizes the false social reality of the American society during the mid-20th century, which promoted the"American Dream".This paper uses collective unconsciousness theory to examine the manifestations, motivations, and self-identity reconstruction process of Ethan's imbalanced self-consciousness,revealing how the subject actively seeks individualization in an unconscious state, thereby offering a unique perspective on complex human nature.
