Identification and fine mapping of the male sterility gene msg_(N13401)reveals defective pollen starch accumulation in barleyOA
Highlights·A novel EMS-induced barley male-sterile mutant(N13401)was identified and characterized, and it shows defective pollen starch accumulation.·The male sterility gene msgN13401 was fine-mapped to a 576.9 kb region on chromosome 2H using a wild-cultivated barley cross to overcome the low polymorphism of cultivated barley.Barley(Hordeum vulgare L.),the world''s fourth most cultivated cereal crop, serves as a key raw material for the brewing industry and a significant feed source for livestock(Geng et al.2022).Exploiting heterosis is a pivotal strategy for boosting crop yields(Wan et al.2019).Male sterility genes and their corresponding mutants are valuable genetic resources for facilitating hybrid seed production(Li et al.2020).
