Professor KUANG Huitao proposes that the core pathogenesis of primary Sjogren's syndrome(PSS)is"earth(spleen)deficiency leading to metal(lung)decline"—that is,spleen qi deficiency as the initiating pathogenesis,and lung qi and yin injury as the direct pathogenesis.Accordingly,she has proposed the theory and the treatment principle of"cultivating earth to generate metal and simultaneously regulating dryness and bi-impediment."Guided by this theory,Professor KUANG formulated Qingzao Biyu Paste,which functions to strengthen the spleen and supplement qi,and to tonify the lung and generate fluids.It is composed of Xiyangsheng(Panacis Quinquefolii Radix),Huangqi(Astragali Radix),Maidong(Ophiopogonis Radix),Shihu(Dendrobii Caulis),Yuzhu(Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma),Huangjing(Polygonati Rhizoma),Danggui(Angelicae Sinensis Radix),Mugua(Chaenomelis Fructus),Wushaoshe(Ptyas),Gancao(Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).This medicated paste has the effects of strengthening the spleen and moistening the lung,as well as unblocking collaterals and alleviating pain,thereby achieving the simultaneous treatment of the lung and spleen,tonification of both qi and yin,and simultaneous regulation of dryness and bi-impediment.This article systematically reviews Professor KUANG Huitao's food-medicine homology strategies for treating PSS based on the theory of"strengthening earth to generate metal and simultaneously regulating dryness and bi-impediment,"aiming to provide references for differentiating and treating this disease clinically.
