By systematically reviewing ancient herbal classics and modern Chinese materia medica literature,this study investigates the origin,harvesting,processing,properties,flavours,meridian affinity,efficacy,and indications of Heye(Nelumbinis Folium).A comprehensive analysis of historical records indicates that Heye(Nelumbinis Folium)is derived from the leaf of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.The understanding of its botanical origin has been consistent from ancient times to the present,with no reported confusion.The leaf is primarily harvested in summer and autumn.The processing methods of Heye(Nelumbinis Folium)began with roasting in the Tang Dynasty and gradually developed into various forms during the Song and Ming dynasties,including ash-firing,baking,and stir-frying.In modern times,both raw and charcoal-fried preparation are employed.These processing differences are closely related to clinical efficacy orientation,such as clearing heat and raising the clear yang,as well as stopping bleeding.Ancient herbal and modern Chinese materia medica works generally describe Heye(Nelumbinis Folium)as bitter in flavour and neutral in property,primarily accessing the liver,spleen,and stomach meridians.Its main efficacies include clearing summer heat and transforming dampness,raising the clear yang,as well as cooling blood and stopping bleeding.It is commonly used for summer-heat diseases,spleen deficiency diarrhea,and various bleeding-related conditions.This study systematically reviews the historical understanding and evolutionary patterns of Heye(Nelumbinis Folium)across dynasties,clarifies the theoretical framework of its harvesting,processing,and efficacy differentiation,and provides philological and theoretical foundations for clinical rational application,optimization of processing standards,and related mechanistic research.
