Objective To provide a theoretical basis for the long-term management of chronic ophthalmic diseases and the development of related functional products by exploring the pharmacological mechanisms of Gegen(Puerariae Lobatae Radix)and its active components in the field of ophthalmology based on its traditional efficacy in"raising clear yang and unblocking collaterals and vessels."Methods Ancient records and traditional functions of Gegen(Puerariae Lobatae Radix)were systematically reviewed.The ophthalmic-related pharmacological pathways of its core active components were concluded.The rules of pattern identification-based clinical compatibility of Gegen(Puerariae Lobatae Radix)for common chronic eye diseases were summarized.Additionally,the application value of its active components in the development of ophthalmic-related functional foods was analyzed.Results Gegen(Puerariae Lobatae Radix)is a commonly used Chinese medicinal herb with food-medicine homology.It possesses the functions of relieving muscle and abating fever,promoting fluid production to quench thirst,raising yang to stop diarrhea,and unblocking collaterals and vessels.Its active components exert effects through multiple pathways,including inhibiting inflammatory responses,reducing oxidative stress,antagonizing vascular endothelial growth factor,inhibiting apoptosis,and dilating blood vessels to improve microcirculation.Through pattern identification-based clinical compatibility,Gegen(Puerariae Lobatae Radix)is widely used in treating diabetic retinopathy,dry eye,retinal vascular diseases,ocular accommodation dysfunction,and other ophthalmic diseases.It also shows good potential in the development of functional foods.Conclusion Gegen(Puerariae Lobatae Radix)has a solid theoretical foundation in Chinese medicine,clear pharmacological support,and extensive clinical application value in ophthalmic disease prevention and treatment,which can provide new ideas and a basis for long-term management of chronic ophthalmic diseases and the research and development of related products.
