Research on the mapping structures of SDR to HDR in motion picture:Empiri-cal analysis based on ASC StEM2 test film

本文以美国电影摄影师协会(ASC)技术测试片StEM2为研究对象,通过对全片18,580帧的逐像素统计,建立高动态范围(HDR)图像格式EXR源数据、标准动态范围(SDR)与高动态范围发行母版三层对照体系,系统分析了三者间的亮度与色彩映射结构关系.研究发现,HDR与SDR母版在亮度维度上呈现高度稳定的全局单调对应关系,画面几何结构在整体上保持一致,仅在自发光高光与特定材质区域出现稀疏且结构化的偏离;在色彩维度上,二者整体保持色相稳定,饱和度呈现中间调释放、两端收敛的重分配特征.本文进一步引入EXR作为物理参考构建决策图谱,统计结果表明约82.4%的图像区域可通过对SDR版本的物理复原实现向HDR的有效适配,仅在极端高光与特定材质区域需进行有限的语义性调整,以匹配HDR的动态范围与色彩特性.研究表明,SDR到HDR的适配过程可概括为一种"受限复原"机制,该机制及其统计规律可为相关算法开发和人工智能(AI)模型先验设计提供参考.

Taking the American Society of Cinematographers(ASC)technical test film StEM2 as the research object,and conducting a pixel-level statistical analysis towards its 18,580 frames,this paper establishes a three-layer comparative framework and systematically analyze its luminance and color mapping structures.The framework consists of high dy-namic range EXR source data,standard dynamic range(SDR)masters,and high dynamic range(HDR)delivery masters.The results show that HDR and SDR masters exhibit a highly stable global monotonic correspondence in the luminance do-main,with overall geometric consistency preserved across images.Deviations are sparse and structurally localized,mainly appearing in self-emissive highlights and specific material regions.In the color domain,hue remains largely stable,while saturation shows a redistribution pattern characterized by expansion in midtones and compression toward both ends.The study further introduces EXR data as a physical reference to construct a decision map.Statistical results indicate that ap-proximately 82.4%of the image regions can achieve effective adaptation from SDR to HDR through physical reconstruction of the SDR version,while only limited content-aware adjustments are required in extreme highlights and certain material re-gions to match HDR dynamic range and color characteristics.The findings suggest that the SDR to HDR adaptation pro-cess can be described as constrained reconstruction mechanism,whose statistical regularities may provide useful guid-ance for algorithm development and prior design in AI models.
