曹炳章与《医界新智囊》OA

Cao Bingzhang(曹炳章),a prominent representative of physicians in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republican period,dedicated his life to medical research and literature compilation,and was renowned for compiling and publishing the monumental medical series The Great Compendium of Chinese Medicine(《中国 医学大成》).By examining his work Medical World's New Wisdom Repository(《医界新智囊》),it becomes evident that the content is rather distinctive,comprising years of excerpts and accumulations of peculiar and rare medical reports from contemporary newspapers and periodicals.Although the sources of materials are diverse and include some absurd and unfounded claims,the work records a wealth of new knowledge in physics,chemistry,physiology,pathology,and medical natural history.It reflects the dissemination of Western science and medicine as well as the societal attitude towards it at the time,and the efforts of the Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)community in the early 20th century to develop TCM by drawing on scientific methods.Meanwhile,against the backdrop of intense debates between TCM and Western medicine,the TCM community,in its pursuit of progress,reemphasized the return to and preservation of its foundational principles.This holds significant implications for the development of TCM today.
