A Participatory Culture Perspective on Textual Poaching and Meaning Production in Black Myth:Wukong
Against the backdrop of digital technologies empowering the gaming industry, players have asserted their agency as textual poachers through participatory practices such as experiential sharing, decoding, recombination and fictional creation.Focusing on the blockbuster game Black Myth:Wukong as a case study, this article argues that player communities have achieved a shift in narrative power through"textual poaching"based on Henry Jenkins'theory of participatory culture. This process forms a participatory chain ranging from cross-media translation of cultural symbols to construction of community-based knowledge networks and proliferation of meaning within a vast ecosystem of user-generated content.Ultimately, such engagement helps to awaken collective cultural memory, mitigate the"cultural discount"in cross-cultural communication and extend the spectrum of cultural consumption.
