The epitaphs composed by Wang Anshi are guided by a principle of"inherent meaning",placing particular emphasis on the expression of the author's autonomy.This sense of autonomy is further manifested in Wang Anshi's self-conscious insertion of the authorial persona into the epitaph narrative,integrating the author's voice into a text traditionally belonging to the bereaved family and the deceased.This not only conveys the essential biographical information but also creates a channel for personal commentary.On this basis,the writing strategy of"xuwen"(虚文)emerges,which helps to overcome narrative challenges such as lack of materials or obscure life details,while also serving as a vehicle for rich emotional expression.Wang Anshi's epitaphs draw stylistic inspiration from both Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan,while also incorporating Ouyang Xiu's advocated spirit of"factual recording".Influenced by a strong authorial self-awareness and the repeated use of fictive strategies,Wang's epitaph writing developed a distinctive style that exerted a profound influence on later generations.
