理雅各对中国文学叙事与历史题材小说的编译,是目前汉学研究中较少涉足的领域.其不仅是中国典籍文献的翻译者,更是以中英教育为己任的文学重构者.中国古典小说与苏格兰民族传奇故事,既在君主圣人和民族英雄的历史人物形象上具有相似的性格特质,也在情节内容上含有共通之处.因此,理雅各融合了中国古典章回体小说历史演义与苏格兰民族英雄传奇的两种叙事传统,以文学为媒介,在中英教育体系下实现了跨文化教育书写以及异域民族之间的知识权力对话.作为苏格兰文化精英,理雅各以史实为基、以传统为脉的研究视域,持续关注英雄传奇文体与民族作家群体.一方面隐喻了其在英国框架下对苏格兰民族身份认同问题的深度思考,并以自身教育实践诠释对英国社会的贡献以及对英中关系的推动;另一方面,作为国际中文教育最早的成功探索者,理雅各将文学的民族性提升为一种全人类的教育观念,在道德伦理教化与君子典范树立的过程中,充分彰显了教育与学识对人类个体成长与社会发展的持续影响.

The translation of Chinese literary narrative and historical themed novels by James Legge is currently a less explored area in research.He is not only a translator of Chinese classics and literature,but also a literary re-constructor who takes Chinese-English education as his responsibility.Chinese classical novels and Scottish national legends share similar personality traits in the historical figures of monarchs,saints and national heroes as well as similarities in plot content.Therefore,James Legge integrated two narrative traditions of Chinese classical episodic novels in historical romance and Scottish national heroic legend and achieved cross-cultural educational writing and dialogue of knowledge and power between foreign ethnic groups through literary media in the Chinese and English education systems.As a cultural elite in Scotland,James Legge pays attention to the genre of heroic legend and the group of national writers from the perspective of factual basis and historical tradition.On the one hand,it metaphorically reflects on its deep thinking on the issue of Scottish national identity within the framework of the England,interpreting its contribution to British society and the promotion of England-China relations through its own educational practice;On the other hand,as one of the earliest successful attempts in international Chinese education,James Legge elevated the national character of literature to a universal educational concept,effectively demonstrating the lifelong impact of education and knowledge on humanity in the process of moral and ethical education and the establishment of a gentleman's role model.
