Treatment modalities for malignant tumors,such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy,can cause damage to the cen-tral and peripheral nervous systems,often leading to symptoms like numbness and pain.Neurotoxicity is a common complication in tumor therapy and falls under the category of ＂bi syndrome＂in Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM).Modern medicine often demonstrates limited efficacy in symptomatic treatment.Professor Zhang posits that the core pathogenesis lies in ＂deficiency of both qi and blood,with phlegm and stasis intermingling.＂Treatment should differentiate between acute and chronic conditions,addressing both symptoms and root causes.The fundamental approach involves regulating and replenishing qi and blood,as well as fortifying the spleen and stomach to address the root cause,while the symptomatic approach focuses on resolving phlegm,dis-pelling stasis,and unblocking collaterals to alleviate pain.Particular emphasis is placed on the pivotal role of ＂strengthening the spleen＂in harmonizing qi and blood and transforming phlegm and stasis.Oral administration of Chinese herbal medicine is the primary method,with Huangqi Guizhi Wuwu Decoction as the base formula,modified according to symptoms.For instance,herbs like Chuan Guizhi,Huangqi,and Chuanxiong are used to warm the meridians,promote qi circulation,and activate blood to resolve stasis.Professor Zhang also emphasizes external therapies,employing herbal fumigation and washing to directly act on the affected limbs through thermal effects,thereby improving blood circulation and unblocking collaterals.Case studies have shown significant efficacy,with patients experiencing marked relief from limb numbness,absence of pain,restoration of tempera-ture sensation,and substantial improvement in quality of life.This reflects the TCM philosophy of ＂holistic treatment and ad-dressing both symptoms and root causes,＂providing new insights and methods for managing neurotoxicity following malignant tumor treatment.
